What is a lulo/ naranjilla?

Lulo is a fruit that belongs to the family of the nightshades. It has an orange-green peel and the inside is green. The taste is citrusy-tart, and difficult to compare. I found that according to some it resembles the taste of a mix between rhubarb and lime.

You can find the lulo plant in countries like Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, and Colombia. Outside Colombia, it most often goes by the name naranjilla (little orange).

Lulo fruit is rich in vitamins and nutrients and low in calories. You could eat lulo just as it is, but the taste is quite citrusy. A popular way of consuming the fruit is either as a juice or as a lulada.

What is a lulada?

A lulada is a refreshing drink starring lulo (also called naranjilla), which is a Latin-American tropical fruit with a citrus flavor. The difference between a lulo juice and a lulada is that the juice contains completely liquified lulo, whereas the lulada also contains chunks of lulo. Because of the high levels of acidity, the juice and the lulada often contain sugar. You can try without though, I did it once and received the weirdest looks…

Ingredients

A lulada contains the following ingredients:

  • Lulo fruit
  • Sugar
  • Lime juice
  • Water
  • Ice (if desired)

Lulo with water in the blender

How to make a lulada

You make a lulada by liquifying 2/3 of the lulo fruit and mixing it with water, sugar, and lime juice. This mixture you add to a glass, together with small chunks of the lulo fruit. Add some ice to make it even more refreshing.

Variants

Sometimes people add condensed milk to the lulada instead of sugar. I haven’t tried it like that but it sounds like a blast. You can’t go wrong with condensed milk! A version that I did try and like was a Lulada cocktail, which contained the above-named ingredients but also a shot of vodka. Because of the sweetness and the acidity not necessarily to drink a whole evening, but delicious to start the night with.
