Colombian Vegan Oatmeal Drink (Avena)

Colombian Vegan Oatmeal Drink (Avena) is prepared with a milk alternative to make a vegan version of this thick, creamy, sweet drink. You only need (non-dairy) milk, sugar and cinnamon to take make a delicious avena.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup water
  • 3.5 cups milk alternative of choice e.g. oat, soy, almond
  • 2 tbsp sugar or more to taste
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • cinnamon powder (for serving, optional)

Instructions
 

  • Add oatmeal, water and milk to a boiling pot. Bring to a boil. Add sugar and cinnamon stick. Turn low and let boil for 20 minutes until oats are cooked and soft. Stir regularly to prevent burning.
    Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then place in a container and in the refrigerator. Preferably overnight, or minimal a couple of hours until cold.
    When ready to drink, take out cinnamon stick and blend the mixture using a blender for 2-3 minutes until soft and smooth. Adjust thickness by adding some water/milk if desired.
    Sprinkle with cinnamon powder (optional) and drink when cold.
